Course Description
    Spanish 1 is an introduction to the Spanish language and the Spanish-speaking world.  The course deals with everyday life situations through the teaching of key phrases and expressions, which the students must learn in order to be able to communicate in Spanish.  The four basic language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing are covered, with an emphasis upon speaking skills.  Provision is made for developing an appreciation of the history, culture, and customs of the countries in which the language is spoken.

Course Goals
Students will learn to use Spanish to:
    1.  communicate both in and out of the classroom;
    2.  develop an understanding of the customs, arts, literature, history and
         geography
         associated with Spanish-speaking people;
    3.  make connections and reinforce knowledge and skills across academic,
         vocational, and technical disciplines.

SpanishClassOnline.com Curriculum Overview

Project based

SpanishClassOnline.com is a thematic/project-based Spanish curriculum aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards and incorporating Workplace.  The curriculum is designed to coordinate with my SpanishClassOnline.com website (www.spanishclassonline.com) and is continually updated with input from stu- dents and other teachers.

Teaching Methods
     The SpanishClassOnline.com curriculum utilizes a variety of teaching methods, including but not limited to the following:

üEngaged Learning   üCooperative Learning & other group learning activities    üProblem Solving   üTotal Physical Response (TPR)
üPortfolios   üTechnology & multi-media  üCross-curricular Learning   üGames    üMini-lectures

Learning Styles
     Each unit of the curriculum involves the various learning styles, thus providing all students the opportunity to excel in the style with which they learn best.  TPR (Total Physical Response) is used on a daily basis and is an integral part of the curriculum.

Skills
     Communication skills in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking are a high priority in the curriculum, with an emphasis on teaching the students how to be comfortable in speaking Spanish.  In addition, the SpanishClassOnline.com program lends itself well to cross-curricular learning, multi-cultural education, and team teaching.

Assessments
     A variety of assessment methods are incorporated into the Spanish ClassOnline.com curriculum.  Non-traditional assessments are given priority, while still maintaining a suffi- cient number of traditional assessments to prepare students to advance into classes taught in the traditional methods.

Workplace Skills
     Emphasis is placed on the students being able to understand why the study of Spanish can be important to their lives.  The curriculum includes regular classroom and lab use of Spanish related sites on the Internet, and the students learn of various ways they will have opportunity to use the Spanish language in their personal lives and their careers.

Homework
      Homework consists primarily of learning vocabulary words and phrases, and textbooks are used as resources within the classroom only.
     SpanishClassOnline.com is a departure from the traditional methods of learning and teaching the Spanish language.  That is the essence of its appeal!  For the teacher who is able and willing to think “outside the box”, this curriculum can be a very effective curriculum for beginning and advanced Spanish classes.  Besides, it’s fun!

In teams of two, students are assigned a specific page from SpanishClassOnline.com, such as Famous People or Customs and Holidays.  They “surf the web” in search of the very best web sites pertaining to their assigned page.  Using a special rubric, the students evaluate and rank the sites they have visited.  Up to 10 of each team’s selected web sites will be added as recom-mended links on the SpanishClassOnline.com web pages.  Each team
will present its top choices to the entire class and gives a casual report about each site.
